Measles cases are on the rise in New Zealand, and vaccination is the most effective way to protect yourself and your community. The team at Pharmacy Now in Wigram has created this guide to answer your most important questions about measles and the MMR vaccine.

What is measles and why is it serious?

Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It's not just a simple rash. Measles can lead to serious complications, including pneumonia, brain inflammation (encephalitis), and, in rare cases, death. Children under five, adults over 20, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems are at the highest risk of complications.

How do I know if I'm protected against measles?

You're considered protected if you:

  • Were born before 1969 (likely to have natural immunity)
  • Have had two doses of the MMR vaccine
  • Have had confirmed measles disease in the past
  • Have a blood test showing immunity

If you're unsure about your vaccination status, the pharmacist at Pharmacy Now can help you check your records or you can arrange a blood test through your GP.

What is the MMR vaccine?

MMR stands for measles, mumps, and rubella. It's a combined vaccine that protects against all three diseases with a single injection. The vaccine contains weakened versions of the viruses that trigger your immune system to build protection without causing the actual diseases.

Who should get the MMR vaccine?

The MMR vaccine is recommended for:

  • All children at 12 months and 15 months of age (two doses)
  • Anyone born after 1969 who hasn't had two doses
  • Healthcare workers and early childhood education staff
  • People planning international travel
  • Anyone who has been in contact with a measles case

Live vaccines are not recommended if you are pregnant or have a weakened immune system – talk to your pharmacist or doctor if you are not sure whether the MMR vaccine is suitable for you.

Can adults get vaccinated?

Absolutely. Adults who haven't had two doses of MMR vaccine can and should get vaccinated, especially during an outbreak. It's never too late to protect yourself. The vaccine is free for eligible people in New Zealand.

Is the MMR vaccine free?

Yes. In New Zealand, the MMR vaccine is free for:

  • Everyone under 18 years of age, regardless of immigration status
  • Adults aged 18 and over who are eligible for funded healthcare
    • As of 1 October 2025, Health NZ has agreed to fund MMR vaccine doses during measles outbreaks for non-immune adults who are not typically eligible for funded healthcare.

If you're unsure whether you're eligible for free vaccination, ask the team at Pharmacy Now or contact your GP.

Is the MMR vaccine safe?

Yes. The MMR vaccine has been used safely for decades and is one of the most thoroughly studied vaccines in the world. Common side effects are mild and may include:

  • Soreness at the injection site
  • Mild fever
  • A faint rash

Serious side effects are extremely rare. The risks from measles disease are far greater than any risk from the vaccine.

How effective is the MMR vaccine?

The MMR vaccine is highly effective. One dose is about 93% effective at preventing measles, while two doses are about 97% effective. This is why two doses are recommended for full protection.

Can I get the MMR vaccine during the current outbreak?

Yes, and it's strongly encouraged. Even if you've been exposed to measles, getting vaccinated within 72 hours may still provide protection or reduce the severity of the disease. Contact your GP as soon as possible if you think you've been exposed.

Where can I get vaccinated in Wigram?

MMR vaccines are available through:

  • Most pharmacies (if over 3 years of age)
  • Your general practice
  • Community vaccination clinics
  • Public health services

The team at Pharmacy Now can point you in the right direction and help you understand your options.

What should I do if I think I have measles?

If you develop symptoms such as high fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, or a red blotchy rash, do not go directly to a medical centre or pharmacy. Phone your GP or Healthline (0800 611 116) first. Measles is so contagious that you could spread it to many people in a waiting room.

How can I protect my baby who is too young for the vaccine?

Babies under 12 months are too young for the routine MMR vaccine, but they can receive it from six months of age during an outbreak. The best protection for young babies is to ensure everyone around them is vaccinated. This creates a protective shield called "herd immunity."

What if I'm pregnant or planning to become pregnant?

You cannot receive the MMR vaccine while pregnant, but you should check your immunity before conception. If you're not immune, you can be vaccinated after giving birth. It's safe to breastfeed after receiving the MMR vaccine.
